Critique

Age of Adaline revolves around the story of the peculiar case of Adaline Bowman who happens to stay at the age of 29. It can be categorized in a fictional fantasy romance genre where our heroine struggles in solving her condition while finding love in between.

Stunning Blake Lively

never age ; source: chronicles of faith

We need an actress with timeless beauty playing the character Adaline Bowman. I believe they made the right choice of casting Blake Lively for this role. Her class, poise, and femme appeal since Gossip Girl are one of my measures of beauty. She nailed the fashion in every era for this film, I mean she can live in any generation and still be an eye-catching beauty. Excuse me for being bias. lol.

Be Forever Young with Lightning

I must remind you that this film is only fiction. There is no proven scientific basis that a strike of lightning can help humans not age. In the 21st century, most people are obsessed to still find that fountain of youth but now more in the method of medical prescription of pills, diet, and plastic surgery. Most ladies would love to be like Adaline Bowman.

Though this kind of plot is nothing new, I watched the Goblin, a k-drama, when the protagonist is having the same dilemma of not aging but because of the cursed sword. A more classic example is a story about vampires, which contributes to much literature ever since. The bottomline is we are in conflict when we go against the nature of life such as escaping death and be forever young. Like Adaline, she changes her identity from time to time in order to continue living in the pretense of being normal. Exploring the possibilities and resolving this issue is the most interesting thing in watching the film.

Chronological Narrative

The production design for the Age of Adaline film is commendable from using Ford Falcon 1960 cars, 1980s velour dress to Manilyn Monroes haircut. Yes, I was pretty convinced that my eyes are also time traveling while watching the sequence of this chronological narrative.

The idea also of connecting this past lover to her present lover did surprise me in the end. As you progress in the story, you will be emotionally attached to our heroine and hopes that she gets the normal life and love she deserves as a resolution of this strange situation she endured for almost 8 decades.
